Jennie Clemens-Mark Twain's Niece
In 1864, the niece of Mark Twain,(Sam Clemens) became very ill in Carson City at age 9, and
Jennie Clemens was buried in Lone Mountain cemetery Carson City after her death.
Twain was then living in Virginia City, and also spent much time at his brother's house in Carson.
Twain was bitter after her death, and wrote a story the undertaker
had greatly overcharged his brother Orion for Jennie's funeral services.
Twain then began a lifelong battle against overpriced undertakers, and his writing became more sarcastic
and hardhitting after Jennie's death.
